Let's end discrimination from our native land

Nepal is an independent, indivisible, sovereign, secular, inclusive, democratic, socialist-oriented, republican, multiethnic country. In spite of having multiethnic, multilingual, multi-religious and multicultural characteristics and geographically diversified with common aspirations, Nepalese are living in harmony.Although they are living in harmony, most of the downtrodden Nepalese are deprived of human rights. In spite of being guaranteed human rights to Nepalese by her constitution, why so many Nepalese are being tortured in different forms, is the burning issue of present Nepal.

So many widows are tortured and misbehaved mostly in the Terai and very common all over Nepal. Some newly married brides are burnt and tortured for not carrying dowry mostly in the Terai belt of Nepal. In the same ways, some Dalits from different parts of Nepal are beaten and punished in different forms for entering the temple, carrying water from the public well or touching the priests of temples. Inter-caste marriage has created chaos in society. On the one hand, the constitution of Nepal encourages youths to get married between inter caste, on the other hand so called people boycott them or capture the amount given by the government of Nepal for the encouragement of marriage. The more surprising fact is that many mothers of daughters are not well fed, ignored and even beaten for not giving the birth of sons.

Even schools are not safe for children. News of school children being tortured, beaten, or harassed by teachers are very common in Nepal. During the time of menstruation girl students have to stay at home and are deprived of their rights to education. Even in a well-educated family, there is gender bias and women are supposed to be inferior sex. There is sex discrimination between males and females or sons and daughters. From the very beginning of socialization, the children are taught to be different between sons and daughter. If a boy of six or around it takes a broom and begins to sweep, the elders of the child comment him saying “He is like a daughter.” What it means the task of washing, sweeping, cooking or other unpaid jobs are for females. In the same way, even songs show the discrimination. For example, “Chhoromanchhevayer run hudaina” What it means. Indeed, women are soft-hearted. Weeping or crying suits to women or girls, not to boys or men.

Are these discriminations, tortures and voiceless the result of illiteracy and ignorance? Somehow ‘yes’ and somehow ‘no’? If it is due to education, why school children are beaten and schools are not children friendly? Why a newly bride educated woman is misbehaved or an educated young but poor girl is not married to a bridegroom from a rich family? When does a mother or father of a boy feel happy seeing their son sweeping the room with a broom? How such a discrimination existing in Nepal can be eliminated from Nepal? When and how can a subaltern raise his\her voice for his/her rights? What are the present necessities to Nepalese? Only writing on the constitution is not the solution. Even in Nepal untouchability was abolished in 1963 AD. Therefore, writing on the constitution or in other forms is not the solution. It needs regular practices and public aware centers to raise the oppressed voice and make the concerned authority listen to their voice
.
On the auspicious moment of Dashain, Tihar, Chhat and Nepal Sambat, may our almighty bless all Nepalese for their standard life with the harmony of various castes and sound health. Let all evils chase away from our psyche and work for the betterment of Nepal and Nepalese.
